Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own Archery Equipment?

No, at least not initially. We have simple bow and arrows setups, both compound and recurve, that will get you started and give you a feel for the sport. When you are ready to buy your own equipment, we can provide some guidance if required.

Do I need to be a member of the club to shoot here?

Yes, although you can shoot 3 times as a temporary member first, you will just to pay bow hire if needed. Once you are a full or ordinary member you will need to join ABA. See the membership page for more detail. Bow hire is also available to members.

What does it cost?

  • WBA membership is $40.00 per year, payable from the 1st July;
  • There is also a shoot fee of $5.00 or $3.00 for children when you attend;
  • Bow hire is $10.00 each time, and
  • ABA membership is currently $90.00 for first year, and then $65 per year.  There are discounted rates for families in both organisations.

What kind of bow can I use?

Any type of bow except crossbows (as these are considered firearms and can only be used on a gun range in Queensland). There are safety considerations of course, and all bows and arrows must be fit for purpose and fit the archer.  Senior members can help check gear if needed.

When am I allowed to shoot a bow on the practice range and when can I participate in the main archery activities?

As soon as you want to really! You will need to be able to accurately shoot to 20 metres and then you can head out and shoot from the yellow (cub) peg. As you improve you can move back to the adult distances (48 metres max).

Where can I get more information?

The ABA  and IFAA web sites are good places to start. There are many internet sites, YouTube videos and library books that are a good place to get basic information on technique and form.

Alistair Whittingham of performance-archery.com is a good site, as is George Ryals IV on Youtube.
